Special Easter For Recovering Addicts At Dallas Facility

CBS DFW
Easter is a time for resurrection.

And nowhere is that more evident than at the Nexus Recovery Center in far East Dallas, where nearly 100 women are battling addiction.

A simple egg hunt had a powerful impact on a group of mothers there last week. Nexus is one of the few centers in the state that allows moms in rehab to keep their children with them.

The mothers there say having their children with them makes all the difference in the world.

"You meet other women that are going through the same thing with their children and they're at the day care and you all sort of form a bond," said Lisa Elizondo, a former Nexus patient.

Elizondo was hooked on drugs for five years. She chose Nexus because someone had to care for her young son while she got clean and sober. Having her son there served a wake up call, she said.

"Once that fog has lifted and you start having a little bit of the clarity because you're not using drugs anymore, then all the emotions set in that I want to be a good mother," she said. "I want to be there for my children again."

But it's more than just daycare. Children actually live with their recovering mothers, which means once rehab classes are done for the day, moms can be moms.

"At the end of the day, when you see your child smile at you, it makes it all worth while," Elizondo said. "It makes it all worth doing, when they hug you and you, 'I love you Mommy.'"

I treasure the day that I came into Nexus. I have 10 years clean!
